How to Create a Backyard Butterfly Garden

Today’s the last day of Camp Stay & Play, and we’re excited to wrap things up with something magical—a butterfly garden you can plant in just a few simple steps.
Materials Needed:
-
Wildflower seed mix (look for native nectar-rich varieties to where you live!)
-
A patch of soil, garden bed, or small pots
-
Trowel or spoon for digging
-
Watering can, spray bottle, or large cup
-
Optional: rocks, paint, or signs to decorate the garden
Instructions:
Step 1: Choose your planting spot
Butterflies love the sun, so pick a spot that gets a good amount of direct sunlight each day.
Step 2: Prep the soil
Use your hands or a trowel to loosen the soil. If you’re using pots, fill them will potting mix.
Step 3: Sprinkle the seeds
Scatter your seeds over the soil and gently press them in. No need to bury them!
Step 4: Water gently
Using a watering can, spray bottle, or cup moisten the soil—just enough to keep it damp, not soaked.
Step 5: Watch it grow
Keep an eye on your garden, give it a little water when the soil feels dry, and get ready for fluttery visitors. It won’t happen overnight, but it’s worth the wait.
