We're excited to be partnering with our friends at The Conscious Kid again this year with a curated book list! (Read here about last year's collaboration.) Co-founders Katie and Ramon compiled 21 great books that your kids will love, highlighting bold and courageous characters and historical figures who altered and improved the world around them through art, music, forward thinking, and standing up for social justice.
"A few personal favorites from the list are Nina by Traci N. Todd, Dream Builder: The Story of Architect Philip Freelon by Kelly Starling Lyons and Think Big, Little One by Vashti Harrison. We love that these books shine a light on the stories and incredible contributions of bold and inspiring change leaders throughout history who we may not always hear or learn about."
We also asked them for any advice for kids who aren't initially excited about reading. Below are a few recommendations:
- Help bring books to life, talking about the pictures to kids and letting them describe what they see - reading can be an opportunity to support literacy and bonding between caregivers and kids.
- Pick books (and allow kids to pick their own books) that relate to what kids have an interest in and can identify with.
- Create a fun, cozy reading environment for kids. This can include snacks, pillows, pajamas, using unique voices or sitting on the grass outside to create a special environment just for reading.
- Include friends or family for virtual read alouds.
Throughout the next several weeks, the team at Primary as well as influencers from our community will be writing book reports on some of these books—with a chance for you to win titles highlighted in their reports. You can stay tuned by keeping up with our Instagram.
