Instructions:
Create the headpiece:
-
Make the bulbous snout with a rectangle of green felt and two large teardrop felt shapes for the sides.
-
Glue the rectangle piece along the top and front curve of the teardrop pieces. Turn this glued snout inside out so that the seams are on the inside.
-
Glue the snout to the front of a baseball cap and stuff it as you glue. The bottom edge of the felt can overhang the bill of the cap a bit, and you can trim it away when finished.
-
Glue two small black felt nostrils to the snout.
-
Cut the eyes from a sheet of white craft foam.
-
Glue green felt to the back and green eyelids to the front.
-
Use black and white craft foam for the eyes and glue in place.
-
Use a black marker to draw a straight line between the eyes.
-
Cut three rounded red craft foam scales and glue them sticking up to the back of the cap.
Make the body and tail:
-
Cut a panel of green felt that fits over the front of the child’s torso.
-
Glue a panel of white felt down the center of this piece for the belly.
-
Cut a panel of green felt that fits over the back of the child’s torso with a long pointed tail.
-
Cut two wide, curved, banana shaped pieces from green felt for the sides of the tail, and an elongated triangle from white felt for the bottom of the tail.
-
Hot glue these pieces together with the seams on the inside, and stuff it before closing it up.
-
Glue one shoulder seam and one side seam together.
-
Glue velcro to attach the opposite shoulder seam and side seams together.
Create the shell:
-
Cut a circle from cardboard for the base of the shell.
-
Cut a circle from red felt that is several inches larger than the cardboard circle.
-
Glue about 1” of the red felt edge around the cardboard. Stuff the red shell before closing it up.
-
Cut one leg off a pair of child size opaque white tights and stuff it.
-
Glue the end together. Stretch and glue this piece around the red shell.
