Instructions:
Create the eyepatches
-
Cut two large ovals from white felt.
-
Attach the ovals to either side of the hood with fabric tape.
Make the teeth
-
Cut a strip of white felt that fits around the edge of the hood.
-
Cut one long edge in a zig zag to make the teeth.
-
Attach the teeth along in the inside edge of the hood.
Create the pectoral fins
-
Cut two fins from cardboard that fit over the lower arms. Cut the ends by the hands to be rounded.
-
Sandwich each cardboard piece between two sheets of felt and hot glue them together.
-
Glue black elastic bands to the inner fins for the arms to slide through.
Make the body
The belly, dorsal fin, and tail will be a sandwich board style piece worn over the upper body.
-
Cut a large rectangle of white felt that fits over the child’s chest and belly.
-
Cut a length of black felt that goes from the back of the neckline to the calves of the legs. Cut the bottom half tapered to the beginning of the tail fin, and cut a fin shape at the very bottom. If you would like the tail to be able to bend upward slightly, glue a sturdy wire along the edges of the bottom half. Cover the wire with black felt or ribbon to hide the wire.
-
Cut and glue a double layer of craft foam for the dorsal fin to the upper back of the black felt piece.
-
Glue black ribbon straps at the top of the white belly piece and the black back piece to fit over the shoulders. Glue black ribbon ties to the sides of the costume to hold it around the torso.
