Instructions
- Create the duck bill:
- Cut two matching duck bills from yellow felt.
- Glue a pipe cleaner all along the inside edges of one of the bill pieces.
- Glue the other felt bill on top of the bottom piece, sandwiching the pipe cleaner in between.
- Use a black marker to make two nostril marks on the top bill.
-
Glue an elastic band to either side of the bill to fit comfortably around the face.
- Advanced version: Create the 3D duck bottom & tail:
- For the fluffy bottom: Use a skort that is a size up from the child’s usual size. Cut a length of elastic that will fit around the wearer’s waist. Hot glue the ends together to create a waist band. Cut lengths of white tulle (shown in blue in the diagram below) that are twice as long as the length from the bottom of the skort waist band to the hem. Tie them at the middle of their length around the elastic band until the band is nice and full (see fig 1 below). Wear the tulle skirt under the skirt of the skort but over the shorts (see fig 3 below). This will fill out the duck “bottom” and add a fluffy effect. You may want to secure the tulle skirt in place using a safety pin or two.
- For the tail:
- Cut 2 identical tails from white felt. Glue the outer half of the tail together. Open the inner half of the tail and attach it to the skort using double sided fabric tape so the tail sticks out.
- Finishing:
- Bend the bill to fit snugly over the child’s nose bridge, and bend the sides and front of the bill to stick up and away from the face.
