Instructions
Create the ball
- To make the round ball shape, this magic 8 ball costume is constructed like a beach ball. Two halves of a ball are created using upholstery foam to give it structure. The halves are then connected with black elastic over the shoulders and sides to hold the costume over the torso.
- From upholstery foam, cut 6 beach ball panels - narrow at each end, and widest in the center.
- Use one of the foam panels to trace the pattern onto black felt with white fabric chalk, drawing about ½” from the foam edge. Cut 12 felt panels.
- Hot glue three foam panels together along the long curved edges. Repeat with the remaining 3 foam panels.
- Glue three felt panels together as you did for the foam pieces, along the long curved edges. Repeat until you have 4 sets of 3 felt panels.
- Place one foam half between 2 sets of felt panels and glue the outer edges together. Repeat for the other foam half.
- Glue black elastic straps between each ball half, connecting them at the shoulders and sides.
Create the 8 circle
- Cut a circle from white felt.
- Use a black fabric paint with a fine tip nozzle to draw the number 8 on the felt.
- Attach this piece to a black beanie with fabric tape.
Create the answer
- Cut a triangle from blue felt.
- Use a white fabric paint with a fine tip nozzle to write any answer you like onto the felt.
- Hot glue this piece to the center of the 8 ball.
- Tip: make multiple triangles and use adhesive velco tape to attach and switch answers depending on baby's mood!
